The Rise of TV Chef Programmes: From Fanny Craddock to the Modern-Day Stars
Television has changed the way we cook, eat, and even dream about food. What began as black-and-white kitchen demonstrations has grown into primetime entertainment. TV chefs are now household names, shaping food trends and inspiring us to try something new at home.
The Early Days: Fanny Craddock’s Charm
In the 1950s, Fanny Craddock brought cooking into Britain’s living rooms. With her polished style and no-nonsense approach, she made food aspirational but accessible. Fanny was more than a cook—she was a pioneer. She showed that recipes could be entertaining, and that food could connect people long before Instagram ever existed.

The Bake Off Effect
Skip forward to today, and shows like The Great British Bake Off have become cultural landmarks. Millions of us tune in for the joy of sponge cakes, soggy bottoms, and star bakers. Winners such as Nadiya Hussain have turned that success into TV series, bestselling books, and even product ranges.
The Bake Off magic lies in its warmth. It’s not just about competition—it’s about sharing, learning, and discovering that food is at its best when it connects people.
MasterChef and Modern Icons
MasterChef remains one of the UK’s biggest food shows. Each year it takes home cooks, tests their creativity, and often changes their lives. For judges and contestants alike, it’s a launchpad. Gordon Ramsay’s fire, John Torode’s passion & enthusiasm helped turn a cooking contest into global entertainment.
Today, winners continue to grab the spotlight. Many leave their day jobs—whether that’s in medicine, aviation, or beyond—to follow their food dreams. They go on to open restaurants, publish cookbooks, and in many cases, work as private chefs, offering dining experiences that bring TV-quality dishes into people’s homes.
Where Are the Recent MasterChef Winners Now?
2024 – Brin Pirathapan
Brin left veterinary medicine behind to focus fully on food. His Tamil-Sri Lankan recipes are featured on BBC Good Food, and he’s now planning supper clubs, private dining events, and a debut cookbook.
2023 – Chariya Khattiyot
The first Thai-born winner, Chariya opened Khao Soi by Chariya in Hampshire. Her restaurant celebrates northern Thai flavours, and she’s just published her first cookbook Lanna.
2022 – Eddie Scott
Eddie swapped life as a marine pilot for classical French cooking. Since winning, he’s worked in fine-dining kitchens, taken to festival stages, and built a career rooted in precision and flavour.
These journeys prove how food shows can change lives—and how talent, passion, and perseverance open doors far beyond TV.

From Screen to Table
TV chefs remind us that food is about more than ingredients. It’s about story, memory, and connection. When we watch them create, we feel inspired to try something of our own—whether that’s baking a cake, learning new techniques, or booking a private chef to bring restaurant experiences into our own homes.
Cooking shows will keep evolving. But one thing remains the same: they encourage us to care about quality, to keep learning, and to enjoy the moments food creates around the table.experiences), so it doubles as subtle brand positioning?
James Private Chef: Inspired by the Journey
“At James Private Chef, these stories resonate deeply with me. Just like the chefs we’ve seen on screen, I’m on a continuous journey of learning, testing, and creating dishes that bring people together. Every menu is built with care, every flavour is chosen with honesty, and every experience is designed around the season, quality and service.
The rise of TV chefs shows how food connects us emotionally—through flavour, memory, and shared moments. That same spirit drives my work today. Whether it’s an intimate family gathering or a larger celebration, I will bring restaurant-quality fine dining into homes and venues, turning meals into lasting experiences.
As 2026 approaches, I am planning and developing my private chef business further. I am also building on corporate business. Delivering the Evolve Group Poole event at WhitePepper Chef Academy was so well-received. We have a growing reputation across Dorset. My vision is simple: to make exceptional food personal, accessible, and unforgettable—just like the chefs who first inspired me on screen.
